Innovative Launder System for Atlas/Campaspe Operation

In December 2021, ECP Polyurethanes was tasked with developing a cutting-edge solution for a launder system at the new Atlas/Campaspe operation. Our design, a world-first innovation, addressed complex requirements within stringent spatial constraints.

Project Scope and Challenges

The project involved creating detailed models for 19 launders covering Rougher, Middlings, and Cleaner Circuits. The launders had to fit within pre-existing design limits due to space restrictions. Specifically, the first 15 launders needed to be installed beneath the spiral banks, presenting significant spatial and future maintenance challenges.

Our Solution

ECP Polyurethanes delivered a modular Steel/Specthane lined launder system with two key advantages:

  1. Reduced Width with Enhanced Functionality: Our design significantly reduced the launder width compared to traditional steel/polyurethane-lined systems. We engineered launders capable of managing tails, middlings, concentrates, and super concentrates in four separate chambers, while keeping the overall width under 500mm.
  2. Modular Design for Long-Term Benefits: A common issue with launders is the high wear zone around the outlet area, often necessitating complete replacement. Our modular design allows for easy replacement of key wear areas. Worn sections can be unbolted and replaced with new ones using only hand tools. This approach minimizes manufacturing costs and reduces mobilization and potential downtime.

Project Milestones

In January 2022, our designs received approval, and manufacturing began at both our fabrication and polyurethane facilities. Delivery was completed according to the installation schedule.

As of August 2024, all launders are fully operational with zero failures, demonstrating the effectiveness and durability of our innovative solution.
